How to claim Polkadot tokens

Users who purchased Polkadot tokens at the presale stage can claim DOT tokens. In order to do this, you have to send a zero transaction, which confirms that you get the right to request your tokens. In this guide, we will describe how to claim Polkadot tokens using various wallets.

In order to claim tokens, you will need to follow several steps:

1. Prepare an Ethereum address containing the DOT token indicator;
2. Install Kusama – a decentralized account management center in the Polkadot ecosystem;
3. Generate new Polkadot addresses to get coins;
4. Connect and claim your tokens using your MyCrypto wallet.

After you have claimed the DOT, you can add the token to the stake and earn revenue. To do this, select a reliable validator and vote for it. We suggest you to choose Everstake as a staking provider.

Let’s look at several ways to create a DOT address.

Polkadot.js browser plugin

Polkadot.js extension combines convenience and relative security. You can use the plugin to sign messages and transactions, but this method should not be preferred. Although the polkadot.js plugin can be used as a virtual storage, this wallet is less secure than the Parity Signer app or other air-gap protocols.

Please note that when generating the address, a public key and a seed phrase will be created. A seed phrase is a mnemonic password for your wallet, and it should never be disclosed to anyone. If you lose it, you will not be able to restore access to your funds. Save it in a safe place, hidden from prying eyes, in several copies. It is preferable to do this on paper or other solid-state offline media.

Installation order:

1. Download the Polkadot {plugin.js} from the Google Chrome store

   2. Go to the Accounts tab located on the left side panel of the interface.

      3. Open your account by clicking on the extension button in the upper-right corner of your browser. A separate windowwith the extension opens . Read the message carefully and confirm that you have read and understood it by clicking the “Understood, let me continue” button.

      4. You can create a new account or import an existing one using the seed-phrase. Click ” Create New Account” to generate a new address.

      5. The wallet will generate a mnemonic password – 12 random words. Make a backup copy of the seed phrase and save it in a safe place. To continue, check the box next to “I have saved my mnemonic seed safely”

      6. Come up with a name for your account and protect your wallet with a password. Confirm your password, and then the program will display information about the generated address of your account.

   3. Click “Add the account with the generated seed” to get into your newly created account.

      The address is generated. Now you can use this address to claim DOT.

      
      

      Subkey

      Subkey is a console version of Polkadot wallet designed only for advanced users. If you are not, please refrain from using this wallet. Otherwise, a small mishap may result in the loss of funds. Subkey allows you to automatically create accounts using hardware devices.

      You can generate an address directly from the Polkadot.js app. To do this, go to the control panel, and then open the Accounts section.

      
      

      Note. This is the least secure way to generate an address. Use this method only as a last resort.

      
      

      Click Add Account to add a new Polkadot account.

      In the pop-up window, fill in your account name and set your wallet password. Write down and save the generated seed phrase in a safe place. The “Advanced creation options” section is optional and is intended for advanced users. Click the “Save” button after filling out the form and making a backup.

      Click “Create and backup account” to generate a new address and create a backup copy to be saved on an external electronic media. You can restore your account using a backup.

      Coinbase Custody 

       

      This is a custodial service aimed at institutional investors. You can use Coinbase Custody only if your Ethereum account contains at least 1000 DOT tokens. You can open an account via email address [email protected].

       

      After opening an account, the custodian will create your personal Polkadot address and send it to you, after which you can claim your tokens at any time through the Coinbase Custody personal account.

       

      So, now that you have the generated DOT address, you can proceed to the next step and claim the DOT tokens.

       

      How to claim DOT tokens using MyCrypto

       

      MyCrypto is an advanced Ethereum wallet that supports many ways to store cryptocurrencies. Download the latest version of your desktop wallet from the official website. Versions for MacOS, Windows, and Linux are available. Install the wallet and run it locally to ensure security.

      Launch the Polkadot app.js to sign a message from the MyCrypto wallet. Select the created Polkadot account and click “Continue”.

      Now you can see your account status. Follow the instructions below. You need to copy the displayed message – this will be the public key from your account.

      Launch the MyCrypto wallet and open the “Sign Message” tab. Select the method you want to use to unblock your wallet.

      In the field, insert the previously copied hexadecimal key to sign the message, and click “Sign Message”.

      At the output, you will get a signature in JSON format that you need to copy.

      Copy the entire signature, go back to the Polkadot.js app and paste it into the field as shown in the image below, and then click “Confirm Claim”.

      An inscription will appear on the right that displays the number of DOT tokens available for claiming. Click “ Claim” to get tokens to your address.

      The final step is to authorize the transaction by clicking the “Submit (no signature)”button. If everything is done correctly, your tokens will soon appear on your wallet balance.
