About Axelar
What is Axelar’s idea?
Axelar is a universal decentralized network with an ambitious goal to connect all blockchains, assets and applications through a universal set of protocols and APIs. The team aims to make all of the cross-chain interactions simple and seamless in the same way that our local networks are connected globally. You can send a message from one continent to another without having to think about transferring, and you don’t need to look for bridges or side programs/interfaces to do so. You can send an email from an @gmail.com address to an @yahoo.com or any other domain without thinking much about it. In the same way, Axelar’s team wants to connect the blockchains of all protocols and web3 projects.
Axelar consists of two layers: The network and the API above it.
At Axelar’s core is a permissionless overlay network. It delivers Turing-complete cross-chain communication via proof-of-stake and permissionless protocols. In this way, it’s similar to Akamai and other CDNs that enabled the rise of YouTube, Zoom and a globally interconnected web. Axelar validators monitor gateways on the interconnected chains (smart contracts) and run a decentralized protocol to process cross-chain messages between them.
Ecosystem
Hundreds of protocols and applications are building the future of Web3 with Axelar in different categories: DeFi, NFT, Wallets, Infrastructure, Gaming and Payments. Take a look at the whole list.
Axelar Tokenomics
The total supply at genesis: 1B AXL.
The token economics for AXL is geared towards creating a token economy that supports the Axelar network in achieving the following key outcomes.
- Security. A proper incentives model with healthy staking rewards encourages a wide validator set to operate secure nodes.
- Decentralization. A token distributed across a wide set of holders who will delegate to a decentralized set of validators and contribute to governance decisions.
- Longevity. The token economics are designed to encourage general maintenance of all critical Axelar-related processes (such as block validation).
- Ecosystem growth. The token incentivizes dApp builders to use Axelar APIs for cross-chain development.
AXL token allocations at genesis:
- Company: 29.5% (Core team: 17%, Company operations: 12.5%)
- Backers: 29.54% (Seed: 13.4%, Series A: 12.64%, Series B: 3.5%)
- Community sale: 5%.
- Community programs (incl. insurance fund): 35.96%.
Inflation
The recent Axelar Governance Proposals decreased the inflation rate in the network:
- Base inflation to 4% (2% in Tendermint inflation + 2% for multi-party signing). Note: The governance upgrade proposal will only set Tendermint Inflation at 2.00%; multi-party signing inflation just doubles Tendermint inflation based on current parameters.
- Inflation rate per EVM chain – 0.75%.
- When the new inflation reaches 10.75% (2 more EVM chains added), decrease the base inflation to 1% before adding more chains.
faq
What is Axelar?
+Axelar delivers secure cross-chain communication for Web3. Secure means Axelar is built on proof-of-stake, the battle-tested approach used by Ethereum, Cosmos, Avalanche, and more. Cross-chain communication means you can build a complete experience for your users that lets them interact with any asset, any application, on any chain with one click.
Is it secure to delegate AXL to Everstake?
+Indeed! Delegating to Everstake is secure. When you delegate, you maintain full ownership of your crypto assets. Your tokens never leave your wallet or come under anyone else's control.
Connecting your wallet doesn't involve sending transactions; it simply shares your wallet's public address with the website. Any actions require your approval as the wallet owner.
What’s the simplest way to stake AXL?
+Staking AXL is a breeze from this page—just a few clicks away. Simply connect your Keplr wallet and follow these steps for a seamless delegation experience:
- Connect your wallet
- Specify the token amount to stake
- Click the 'Stake' button and you're good to go!

+What is AXL?
+AXL is a native token of the Axelar Network. It is used for rewards in the network, fees, and can be used for staking and exercising governance over proposals.
Read our article about the AXL token to learn more.
What is WAXL?
+WAXL is a wrapped, ERC-20 version of the Axelar (AXL) token, that is represented on the Ethereum chain. This token can be used for trading on exchanges.
What is the difference between AXL & WAXL?
+Some exchanges will not list the native version of the token (AXL), as supporting a new blockchain involves some degree of complexity on the part of an exchange. Instead, they will therefore support its ERC-20 version (WAXL) which is one such cross-chain representation of the AXL token.
Take a look at the key aspects:
- 1 AXL = WAXL and can be swapped by anyone via the Axelar permissionless layer through bridge front-ends, such as satellite.money.
- Native AXL addresses have the prefix 'axelar.'
- An AXL ERC-20 address has the same prefix '0x' as other Ethereum addresses.
Pay attention that you can stake only with the native token AXL. If you want to stake AXL, read our guide on how to convert it from wAXL:
What is AXL staking?
+The AXL token is the key to secure cross-chain communication, incentivizing the delegated proof-of-stake consensus that secures the Axelar network. Axelar network validators produce new blocks, participate in multiparty signing and vote on external chain states. Tokenholders stake the AXL token, delegating tokens to a validator’s staking pool and receiving rewards, minus the validator’s commission.
Is staking available in wAXL?
+No. You can only stake in the native AXL token.
Is there a minimum staking amount?
+No. You can stake as much as you want.
What is the frequency of rewards?
+Axelar staking rewards are distributed at the end of a block every six seconds.
When will I receive the first reward?
+Staking rewards accrue every block (6 seconds) and will be available on your balance once claimed. While staked AXL will remain locked in your wallet until you unstake them. After the lock period of seven days expires, you may withdraw staked AXL.
What is the unstaking period?
+Unstaking process will take 7 days to complete, and will affect your rewards. In addition, undelegating AXL will incur a gas fee. 5 AXL should be enough to cover this fee, but this number may change under certain market conditions.
Are AXL rewards compounding?
+Compounding requires a new delegation. You need to withdraw staking rewards and re-stake them with the frequency if you want to make use of compounding returns. The steps required to re-stake AXL tokens vary from wallet to wallet. For CoinList users, AXL staking rewards are automatically re-staked to earn additional rewards until they choose to unstake and/or withdraw them.
