Blockchain Overview

Walrus is a cutting-edge decentralized storage network designed for blockchain applications and autonomous systems. It stands out by its revolutionary approach to erasure coding, which combines speed, efficiency, and resilience.

Here’s how it works: Walrus transforms unstructured data into smaller, encoded fragments—“slivers”—and distributes them across a robust network of storage nodes. Remarkably, even if two-thirds of these slivers go missing, the original data can still be reconstructed seamlessly. This reliability is achieved with a replication factor as low as 4x-5x, comparable to traditional cloud storage systems, but with significant advantages. Walrus eliminates centralized points of failure and stands strong against widespread disruptions, ensuring your data remains accessible and secure.

Key Innovations and Features of Walrus

  • Efficient Decentralized Storage: Walrus employs erasure coding to fragment large data blobs into smaller "slivers," which are distributed across the nodes network. This approach ensures that data can be reconstructed even if up to two-thirds of the nodes fail, delivering increased reliability with a minimal replication factor of 4x-5x.
  • Cost-Effective Storage Solution: Walrus significantly reduces replication costs, enabling large volumes of data to be uploaded with minimal network load. Each storage node requires only a fraction of resources compared to the data blob size, making the system both scalable and economical.
  • Enhanced Data Availability and Integrity: Walrus has built-in resilience against adversarial conditions, ensuring data availability without requiring full downloads. This feature is precious for blockchain applications that rely on consistent access and efficient certification of data integrity.
  • Support for Web3 and Decentralized Experiences: Walrus enables the hosting of decentralized web resources, including HTML, CSS, and media, ensuring that dApps can maintain decentralization on both the front and back ends.
  • Scalability for High Storage Demands: Built on Sui Network, Walrus scales horizontally to accommodate thousands of nodes. It delivers Exabyte-level storage capacity while maintaining competitive costs compared to centralized solutions.
  • Developer-Friendly APIs: Walrus offers APIs and a command-line client, allowing developers to integrate seamlessly into various use cases, such as decentralized applications, blockchain archival storage, AI datasets, and subscription-based media models.

faq

Is Walrus Proof-of-Stake?

+

Walrus is a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (dPoS) network.

What is WAL?

+

WAL is the native Token of Walrus.

What is FROST?

+

FROST is the smallest unit of WAL (similar to MIST for SUI); 1 WAL equals 1 billion FROST.

What is a blob?

+

A blob is a single unstructured data object stored on Walrus.

What is a sliver?

+

Silver is an erasure-encoded data of one shard corresponding to a single blob for one of the two encodings; this contains several erasure-encoded symbols of that blob but not the blob metadata.

What is a shard?

+

A shard is a (disjoint) subset of erasure-encoded data of all blobs; at every point, a shard is assigned to and stored on a single Storage Node.

What is Red Stuff?

+

Red Stuff is Walrus’ innovative encoding algorithm, which breaks data into slivers for efficient storage. Allows for faster data access, increased resiliency, and scalability.

What are the roles in Walrus?

+

  • The storage node is an entity that stores data for Walrus and holds one or several shards. To participate in the network, storage nodes must stake WAL.
  • Aggregators are clients that reconstruct blobs from slivers and make them available to users over traditional Web 2 technologies (such as HTTP).
  • Publishers are clients that help end users store a blob using Web 2 technologies, using less bandwidth and custom logic.
  • Caches are aggregators with additional caching functionality to decrease latency and reduce load on storage nodes. A client can always verify that reads from such infrastructures are correct.

What is the Storage Committee?

+

The Storage Committee is the set of Storage Nodes for a storage epoch, including metadata about the shards they are responsible for and other metadata.

Has Walrus launched on mainnet?

+

Not yet. Currently, Walrus is in the testnet stage.

Are there any rewards?

+

Currently, there are no rewards as Walrus is still in the testnet phase.
